Adding digital media
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
Audio editing software free to download. BTEC First Dips you will have access to this at college and we will provide microphones (although they are quite cheap to buy if you want a go at home).
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx
Easy to use software to make a movie from still images. We also have the option to use this at college and I hope you all take the opportunity to have a go. It is simple and produces a great outcome.

BTEC First Extended Diploma in Fine Art
I will conduct my study as an optional section of a graphics design module on the BTEC Fisrt Extended Diploma. Participants will be guided in the creation of an online art journal, in place of sketchbooks or design sheets, using http://www.blogger.com/.
The use of blogger supports industry based skills in the graphics sector, encouraging use of relevant IT equipment such as digital cameras, scanners and micro-phones, as well as applications/ programmes such as Audacity, Photostory and Adobe Photoshop e.t.c
Participants will be encouraged to adopt a multi-media approach incorporating audio and visual media in support of, or replacing text based analysis of artist research, samples and the production of a final outcome. This approach will facilitate learning particularly well for those who struggle with the more traditional text based method, but may also stimulate deeper learning for high achieving learners by encouraging ongoing reflective thinking as well as catering to a variety of learning styles.
Security setting can be utilised allowing limited access to create a closed group, allowing only group members to view and comment on the participants blogs. However, the potential to allow open access means that participants can experiment with ways of publishing and sharing their artwork with a wider community or potential market.

Progress
I am hoping to commence collection of research within the next two weeks in order to analyse how many people are unhappy with the current art journal/ sketchbook annotation format and are willing to try something new.
I have the backing of fellow teachers in my department and have sought technical support from a very helpful and knowledgeable source. I am excited to get started.

Project aim
I am a trainee fine art teacher conducting an independent research study looking at the potential use of social networking/blogging in Further Education. It is my aim to use ICT skills to reformat the traditional evaluative journal completed as part of the BTEC 1st Diploma, and many other art courses, in an attempt to engage students that find the current handwritten format difficult or uninspiring.
It is my belief that an online journal has the potential to engage students with any learning style as it can cater to read/write learners through blogging and email, visual learners via video and digital photography and auditory learners using pod casts. Furthermore, learners will be engaging practical skills in production and display of work, which will support kinaesthetic learners and present opportunities for experiental learning. The potential to create networks will allow learners to comment on each others work to provide peer feedback and support whilst developing critical analysis skills. Furthermore, students can experiment with self promotion by developing an online presence as a practising artist.
The ability to upload sound or video files will remove some of the barriers presented by the written word for those with dyslexia or low literacy skills, yet will still encourage reflective practise. Learners will also be able to share links and references to encourage research and support web based searching and communication skills.
Incorporating web based technology will support students in meeting Fine Art criteria and developing subject specific skills whilst simultaneously promoting empolyability and life skills allowing self directed and independent learning.
